I was born and raised in Brookline, Massachusetts…the suburb closest and just west of downtown Boston. Boston’s subway system gave me easy access to an enormous geographic and cultural environment. Even as a pre-teen, I was able to take the subway, unaccompanied, to places like Fenway Park, the Museums of Science and Art, the north shore beaches and amusement parks, and the Charles River Basin, where Community Boating taught me how to sail. I was literally liberated from the normal constraints of parents who almost never knew where I was or who I was playing with. It was exhilarating.
My school years, elementary through High School, gave me access to some of the finest teachers and educational programs in the country, benefits I wasn’t fully appreciative of until I was much older. I wasn’t just taught Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic; I was introduced to Art, Music, Theater, Sports, and a view of life that suggested Everything in life was possible when you learned the tools of ‘how to learn’.
My college years at the University of Massachusetts honed and expanded my educational opportunities, and I advanced and majored in English, Literature, and Creative Writing, while supplementing my interests in History and Psychology. The Pioneer Valley in Western Massachusetts gave me access to classes at five different colleges and a natural environment of exquisite beauty and variety.
After college, a friend and I decided to explore the inner workings of our non-conscious minds by studying and exploring the depths and breadth of the Primal Therapy techniques of Dr Arthur Janov. This therapeutic modality of accessing deeply repressed childhood traumas and overwhelms were my earliest exposure to the world of Inner Children, those fragments and personalities that were too painful to hold in waking consciousness. Coincidentally, this was parallel to the same journey that John Lennon and Yoko Ono took in the early 70s, and the topics that formed the core of John’s first two solo albums after leaving the Beatles. Truly an adventure that continues to inform and direct my interests and career today.
